Why Do Aircraft Have Wiring Harnesses?

Four Methods to Separate Flight Control Wiring Harnesses in an Aircraft

Posted by John Ashour on August 6, 2018

The F-16 like many aircraft is a “fly by wire” aircraft. Instead of cables and pulleys, the aircraft is controlled by electrical signals. The electrical signals tell the flight control surfaces how to move and how fast to move. There are 5 flight control surfaces on the F-16: (1) leading edge flap, (2) trailing edge • Read More >>

Third Quarter Trade Shows and Events

Posted by Clare McGarrey on July 30, 2018

2018 has been an exciting year for InterConnect Wiring, filled with plenty of trade shows, events, and conferences, all over the world. We will continue to attend many more events during this 3rd quarter of the year.   Already this July, we attended the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) in London where we experienced world-class static • Read More >>

Why is Connector Polarization Important in Wiring Harness Design?

Posted by Mike Winters on July 23, 2018

When designing aircraft wiring harnesses, or, in fact, any wiring harness, the main purpose of a wiring harness is to transmit signals or electrical power between components in a system.  However, this cannot be achieved unless the wiring harness can physically connect to these components. There are several ways to make these connections but probably • Read More >>

What do Wiring Harness Design Engineers Want in a Software Package?

Posted by Marc Piloian on July 9, 2018

Well obviously, Everything! But what exactly is “Everything”? Modern military aircraft like the F-16, F-22, UH-60, C-130, B-1B and F-35 are all designed either fully or partially using 3D CAD models. In the case of the F-35, an even more complex approach was taken from the onset – the creation of a “digital twin”. • Read More >>

INTERCONNECT RELEASES NEW EBOOK!

Posted by John Ashour on June 25, 2018

F-16 WIRING HARNESS TRAINING This eBook is an advanced eBook because it contains more technical information than other eBooks that InterConnect Wiring (InterConnect) has previously released. When a person goes to college to study electrical engineering they might take a course in their freshmen year called Engineering 101. In their sophomore year they might take • Read More >>

What is an Equipment Location Diagram and How is it Used During Wiring Harness Design?

Posted by Eric Evans on June 11, 2018

In the Aerospace Industry an equipment location diagram details the physical location of equipment installed in an aircraft.  These diagrams typically show the location of equipment with respect to an aircraft (station) coordinate system. Did you know that this XYZ system was originally developed for boats and is comprised of a fuselage station (X-axis), water • Read More >>

What is a System Diagram and How is It Used During Wiring Harness Design?

Posted by Marc Piloian on June 4, 2018

A system wiring diagram is exactly what it sounds like – a diagram of the wiring required for a system. During the design phase of any aircraft, a wiring diagram is developed to show how the electrical wires are interconnected between the various components in each system. Modern combat aircraft like the F-16, F-22, F-35, • Read More >>

What is a Wiring Harness Manufacturing Specification?

Posted by John Ashour on May 29, 2018

For each new aircraft platform (a platform is an aircraft designation such as an F-15, F-16, F-18, F-35, KC-46, P-8, 787, A350, A380, etc.) that is designed and produced by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The OEM, such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or Airbus, writes many manufacturing specifications for their aircraft. A few example specifications • Read More >>

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Backshell Disconnect

Posted by Randy Harmon on May 22, 2018

The process for choosing the correct backshell at an electrical component or disconnect whether it be for the F-16, F-15, F-22, B1-B, Cobra, Huey, or any new aircraft, follow the same basic guidelines. The key to successful backshell selection begins with identifying the application. To do this, a complete description of the backshell’s intended use • Read More >>

Our License

We are the sole licensee of Lockheed Martin for F-16 electrical products. Through this agreement, we have access to Lockheed Martin’s F-16 engineering data, tooling and configuration control information. We also have a Technical Services agreement with Sikorsky for all of their aircraft. This agreement allows us to obtain their engineering data needed to rewire helicopters that Sikorsky manufactures.
