VLOG: WHAT ARE CONNECTORS MADE OF? WHY DOES IT MATTER?

I’m Terri with InterConnect Wiring – where Connections Matter. Today we’re going to be talking about connectors, what they’re made from and why it’s important.

WHAT ARE CONNECTORS MADE OF? WHY DOES IT MATTER?

In order to determine the material and the type of finish of a connector, we have to inspect the part number. In this case the part number is right here. It’s D38999/26WJ35PC. But the letter we’re interested in is the W. The W indicates that this material is made from environmentally-resistant aluminum and it’s in a cadmium olive drab finish. This material is important because this connector can withstand temperatures from -65 to 175℃. Also the conductive plated finish allows for it to ground the harness on the aircraft. Without the conductive plating, it could cause crosstalk, arcing and static discharge.

So to the point – there are lots of different types of connectors and they’re made of lots of different types of materials. What is important is that the material can withstand the environment that it’s used in, it’s cost effective, and it’s easy to use.
