Top 4 Uses of Lasers

Did you ever wonder where the word, “laser” came from? You haven’t? Me either, until now. In my research I found that the word laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.  I would not have even come close to guessing that. The first laser was built in 1960 at Howard Hughes’ facility in California, where the headquarters was located on a Malibu hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Theodore Maiman invented the laser at Hughes Research Laboratories.

laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. Now to the question at hand. What are Top 4 uses of lasers?

1. Medical Application

New laser technology helps people who need to undergo surgery. Each year, advancements in
medical laser applications allow physicians to perform a more diverse range of procedures
quicker, cutting down lengthy patient hospital stays.

2.  Barcoding

Barcoding is an identification method used by a wide variety of companies to track, identify, and manage items. You probably see barcodes every day in common places like grocery stores, libraries, and on shipment labels.

InterConnect Wiring uses barcoding every day in a few spaces including:

  • Inventory Stock Room Management
  • Identifying Each Wire Prior to Wire Lay-Out of a Wiring Harness
  • Shipment of Wiring Harnesses or Cockpit Panels to our Customers

Here’s how barcodes work: Barcode scanners will use a laser to shine light through the barcode and then shine it into a super-sensitive light detector. The black lines on the barcode absorb light, and the white parts of the barcode will shine through and be reflected.

I have no comments about the above image “How A Laser Works” as I am not an engineering-type of person. I affectionately call those people “Nerds”.

3. Light Saber

And speaking of *Nerd Alert*, I am a huge Star Wars fan, so that is the #3 best use of a laser…. To wipe out the Empire. I cried when I saw my favorite Jedi disintegrated by the laser of a light saber. I am truly a nerd in that sense.

And finally, the 4th best use of a laser is…

4. Laser Wire Marking Aerospace Wiring Harnesses

InterConnect has multiple Capris 100™ laser wire marking systems. We can mark over 10 miles of wire per day. Our engineers create batch files for the laser wire marking system based on the wiring harness. Wire technicians load up to 16 spools of wire into each de-reeling system. The laser wire markers then run automatically while the wire technicians monitor each machine’s progress, removing the laser-marked wire from the machine, sending it directly over to wire lay-out.

Please go to this Laser-Wire Marking Video where Steve shows us how a laser wire marking machine works: How Do You Laser Mark Wire for an F-16 Fighter Jet Wiring Harness? (interconnect-wiring.com).

Feel free to contact us if you have any other “best laser use” recommendations. Just put your thoughts in the “Message” section of the form. I’d love to hear from you, so let’s get connected!

We are the sole licensee of Lockheed Martin for F-16 electrical products. Through this agreement, we have access to Lockheed Martin’s F-16 engineering data, tooling and configuration control information. We also have a Technical Services agreement with Sikorsky for all of their aircraft. This agreement allows us to obtain their engineering data needed to rewire helicopters that Sikorsky manufactures.
