Hi, my name is Malich, Training Manager at InterConnect Wiring where Connections Matter. Today we’ll be looking at a 4-axis milling machine and how, what, and why InterConnect uses this machine for F-16 sheet metal parts.

HOW DO WE USE A 4-AXIS MILLING MACHINE?
What is a 4-axis milling machine? It is a CNC mill that will take a solid block (imagine this was full-form) and it will remove metal for parts that can not be bent, kind of like the shape that we have right here. This came from a solid block and couldn’t be bent. So the 4-axis milling machine will come and remove more, more and more metal. This is done for parts that can not be bent or look like this.
To clarify, on certain T-shapes kind of like what’s listed right here, where it would be impossible to make this shape without 1) doing a bend or 2) doing a weld. You would then use the 4-axis mill to remove metal on angles, kind of like this to mirror this T-shaped part. You can see this side right here would be done, but this side right here still has some work to do. So we would put it back on the machine and have them remove this, and then remove this block here, and then we have our T-shape.
