VLOG: How Do You Lay Out Wire For An F-15 Aircraft?

Hello! My name is Steve Floyd, Shop Foreman at InterConnect Wiring. Today we’re going to be laying out wire for an F-15 aircraft.

CONNECTIONS MATTER

Here’s where we do our wire layout. The wire individually comes off of the laser wire marking machine and it goes to two different reference designator points. The operator will first start at the first reference designator point and route the wire all the way down to it’s second reference designator point. Each of the wires will be broken out into different branches and breakouts. Some are a little bit more difficult than others; some take 90-degree or 45-degree turns, so we have to be able to route them correctly. That’s why we place these magnet posts, in order to be able to bend the wires around in the direction that they need to be headed.

So right here, we’re looking at a wiring harness that’s in the first processes or the first stages of it’s development through its build to completion. This wiring harness is in layout, so what’s going to happen is the wires are going to be laid out individually to their reference designators. It’ll then be taped and tied up for terminations, which will then happen after wire layout.

After wire layout and terminations, this wiring harness will then be braided, electrically-tested, packaged and shipped, and then installed into the avionics system of the fighter aircraft.

Finally, after the wire layout, it can start its termination steps. We can then move this harness on to the next step in our process and the flow of itself.

Thanks for watching and tuning in! We are InterConnect Wiring. Be sure to check out our website for more future VLOGs and updates.

Our License

We are the sole licensee of Lockheed Martin for F-16 electrical products. Through this agreement, we have access to Lockheed Martin’s F-16 engineering data, tooling and configuration control information. We also have a Technical Services agreement with Sikorsky for all of their aircraft. This agreement allows us to obtain their engineering data needed to rewire helicopters that Sikorsky manufactures.
